Breeders’ Cup Races

The Breeders’ Cup Races are the yearly event where Thoroughbred racing championships are won or lost. The Breeder’s Cup was designed to showcase the world’s best horses in each racing division, for 2018 there are fourteen Breeders’ Cup Races and purses and awards in excess of $30,000,000. The maximum field for each race is fourteen, except for the 2018 Juvenile Sprint, which has maximum field of 12. This year the 35th Breeder’s World Championships will be on November 2nd and 3rd at Churchill Downs.

This marks the ninth time that Churchill Downs will host the Breeders’ Cup.

Friday, November 2

Longines Distaff

The Longines Distaff, Grade1, brings together the best three-year -old and up female dirt horses for a championship showdown at 1 1/8 miles on the main track for a purse of $2,00,000.

2017 winner was Forever Unbridled. She was Trained by Dallas Stewart and ridden by John Velazquez, Forever Unbridled covered the mile and one-eighth at Del Mar in 1:50.25.

Juvenile Turf Sprint

2018 is the inaugural running of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. The race will be at distance of 5.5 furlongs on the turf and is be open to all 2-year-olds. Juvenile’s will compete for purse of $1,000,000.

Juvenile Turf

The Juvenile Turf, Grade 1, is a test of the top juvenile turf horses and is good stepping stone to discover top turf horses for 2019 and beyond. The race is at 1 1/16 mile on the turf and is restricted to male 2-year-olds. Juvenile’s will compete for purse of $1,000,000.

2017 winner was Mendelssohn. He was rained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, Mendelssohn covered the mile on a firm turf course at Del Mar in 1:35.97.

Las Vegas Mile

The Las Vegas Mile, Grade 1, is a one-mile race on the dirt for 3-year-olds and older and will be run around two turns of the main track. The field will compete for a purse of $1,000,000.

2017 winner was Battle of Midway.  He was trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and ridden by Flavien Prat. Battle of Midway covered the mile on the main track at Del Mar in 1:35.20.

Juvenile Fillies Turf

The Juvenile Fillies Turf, Grade 1, brings together the top 2-year-old female turf horses in the world to claim the title of the best 2-year-old female turf in the world. The juvenile fillies will compete for $1,000,000 purse over 1 1/16 miles race on the turf.

2017 winner was Rushing Fall. She was trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Javier Castellano, Rushing Fall covered the mile on a firm turf course at Del Mar 1:36.09.

Saturday, November 3 Breeders’ Cup Races

Filly and Mare Turf

The Filly and Mare Turf, Grade 1, is a race that the world’s best female three-year-old and up turf horses compete. The Filly and Mare Turf race is at distance of 1 3/8 miles race on the turf course for a $2 million purse.

2017 winner was Wuheida She was trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick. Wuheida covered the 1 1/8 miles on the turf course at Del Mar in 1:47.91.

Classic

The Classic, Grade 1, is for horses 3-years-old and up, run at distance of 1 1/4 miles on the dirt. The Classic field will consist of the top distance running Thoroughbreds in the world. The field will compete for a $6,000,000 purse.

2017 winner was Gunner Runner. He was trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Florent Geroux. Gun Runner covered the 11/4 miles on the Del Mar dirt track in 2:01.29.

Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf

The Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, Grade 1, is run at 1 1/2 miles on the turf, for horses 3-years-old and older. The race attracts the best turf horses from Europe and North America to compete for a $4 million purse.

2017 winner was Talismanic. He was trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, Talismanic covered the 1 1/2 miles on turf course at Del Mar in a course record time of 2:26.19.

Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

The Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Grade 1, is for 2-year-old males. The juveniles will compete for the purse of $2,000,000 at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.

2017 winner was Good Magic. He was trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz. Good Magic covered the 1 1/16 miles on main track at Del Mar in 1:43.34.

TwinSpires Sprint

The TwinSpires Sprint, Grade 1, showcases the 6 furlongs speed of Thoroughbreds.  The Sprint is for 3-years-old and older horses, males and females, on the dirt.

2017 winner was Roy H. He was trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Kent Desormeax. Roy H covered the six furlongs on the main track at Del Mar in 1:08.61.

Turf Sprint

The Turf Sprint, Grade 1, for horses 3-years of age and older, at a distance about 5.5 furlongs on the turf course. The field competes for a $1,000,000 purse.

2017 winner was Stormy Liberal. He was trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Joel Rosario. Stormy Liberal covered the five-plus furlongs on the turf course at Del Mar in :54.75.

Filly and Mare Sprint

The Filly and Mare Sprint, Grade 1, is a race at a distance of seven furlongs, around one turn. The field will be comprised of the top 3-years-old and up female sprinters competing for $1,000,000 purse.

2017 winner was Bar of Gold. She was trained by John Kimmel and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr.  Bar of Gold covered the seven furlongs on the main track at Del Mar in 1:22.63.

Turf Mile

The Turf Mile, Grade 1, is a race at distance of one mile, around two turns, on the turf. The field will be comprised of the best 3-years-old and older grass milers, competing for a $2,000,000 purse.

2017 winner was World Approval. He was trained by Mark Casse and ridden by John Velazquez, World Approval covered the mile turf course at Del Mar in 1:34.55.

14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies

The 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies, Grade 1, is a race at a distance of 1 1/16 miles for to 2-year-old females. The field will compete for a $2,000,000 purse. The recent winners of the 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies race have been crowned the 2-year-old fillies Champion.

2017 winner was Caledonia Road. She was trained by Ralph Nicks and ridden by Mike Smith. Caledonia Road covered the 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Del Mar in 1:45.05.

International horses already qualified for the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs

Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf

Two qualifying races run have been so far, both in South America:

  • Quarteto De Cordas won the Gran Premio Brasil at Gavea. He passed the front-running Arrocha in the final yards of the mile-and-a-half contest.
  • La Extrana Dama was an easy winner of the G1 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo, over a mile and a half, at San Isidro, Argentina, last month.

Breeders’ Cup Mile

Four international qualifiers:

  • Legal Eagle won for the third time of the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth in January.
  • Happy Clapper won the G1 Star Doncaster Mile at Randwick in April.
  • Nuevo Maestro, who won his ninth straight victory when taking the 1 1/4-mile G1 Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella, Grade I at Club Hipico in Chile last month.
  • Mozu Ascot, a son of Frankel, who won the Yasuda Kinen Grade I over a mile at Tokyo on June 3.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

Two qualifiers:

  • Oh Susanna won the nine-furlong Carter Paddock Stakes Grade I at Kenilworth in January.
  • Alizee won the Coolmore Legacy Stakes Grade I over a mile at Randwick in April.

Breeders’ Cup Classic

One qualifier:

  • Nonkono Yume won the one-mile February Stakes Grade I on the dirt at Tokyo.

Longines Distaff

One qualifier:

  • Sinfonia Fantastica won the G1 Gran Premio Criadores Grade I at Palermo in Argentina in May.

 Breeders’ Cup Qualifiers as of June 25th

Mikki Rocket won the 9½-furlong $3 million G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin in Japan on June 24th.  Mikki Rocket is now qualified for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. The Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, Grade I, is run at 1 1/2 miles on the turf, for horses 3-years-old and older. The race attracts the best turf horses from Europe and North America to compete for the $4 million purse.

2017 winner was Talismanic. He was trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, Talismanic covered the 1 1/2 miles on turf course at Del Mar in a course record time of 2:26.19.

Also on June 24th, Smart Choice won the 1 1/4 mile G1 Gran Premio Pamplona by a neck over La Divina , earning an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Grade I, is a race that the world’s best female three-year-old and up turf horses compete. The Filly and Mare Turf race is at distance of 1 3/8 miles race on the turf course for a $2 million purse.

The Gran Premio Pamplona was the last of five Breeders’ Cup Challenge races in South America this year. Below is  the list of the 16 qualifiers outside America that have received an automatic berth so far this year to the Breeders’ Cup Championship at Churchill Downs on November 2nd and 3rd.

  • Accidental Agent won the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.

  • Nuevo Maestro won the 1 1/4 mile G1 Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella at Club Hipico in Chile.
  • Mozu Ascot won the Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo.
  • Hunt won the Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita Park

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf : The world’s best female grass horses compete in this 1 3/8 mile race on the turf course for a $2 million purse.

  • Smart Choice won the Gran Premio Pamplona at Hipodromo de Monterrico in Peru.
  • Oh Susanna won the Carter Paddock Stakes at Kenilworth in January.
  • Alizee won the Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Randwick in April.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint: The Turf Sprint, for horses 3-years of age and older, combines both speed and agility for international competitors at about 5.5 furlongs on the turf course.

  • Merchant Navy won Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint: The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint will make its debut at this year’s World Championships, November 2-3 at Churchill Downs and will carry a $1 million purse. The race will be run at about 5.5 furlongs on the turf and will be open to all 2-year-olds.

  • Shang Shang Shang won Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
  • Disco Partner won Jaipur Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.

Breeders’ Cup Classic: The Breeders’ Cup Classic, run at 1 1/4 miles, draws the top international Thoroughbreds year after year. It is open to horses 3-years-old and older and is limited to 14 starters. Purse $6,000,000.

  • Nonkono Yume won February Stakes on the dirt at Tokyo.
  • Pavel won Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Longines Distaff: The Longines Distaff brings together the best female dirt horses for a championship showdown at 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

Dirt Mile: The Dirt Mile is a race for 3-year-olds and older and will be run around two turns of the main track. Purse $1,000,000.

  • Bee Jersey won the Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.
