The Prince of Wales’s Stakes

As the field turned for home in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Cracksman was heading around the around the leaders and moving to the lead. Poet’s Word was moving right to his outside and it was Poet’s Word who had the best late kick in the final 200 yards, edging clear to win by 2 1/4 lengths. After Cracksman, it was another 8 lengths back to Hawkbill in third.

The Queen’s Vase

Aidan O’Brien trained Kew Gardens captured Queen’s Vase for 3-year-olds, a 1 3/4-miles race. Kew Gardens was running at the back of the field for most of the race. Kew Gardens was asked to run coming up the hill and passed the field down the stretch for a 4 1/2 lengths victory. Southern France finished second over Nelson.

The Duke of Cambridge Stakes

Aljazzi, last year’s runner-up, had his picture taken after this year’s Duke of Cambridge. Aljazzi came from with a late kick from near the back of the field to  draw clear in the final 100 yards to win by 3 3/4 lengths. Tribute Act and Wilamina were second and third. Hydrangea, the favorite, followed the early pace leaders but had no late kick and finished eighth.

The Queen Mary Stakes

For the second day in a row, the opening race was won by a horse with high odds.  Signora Cabello won the Queen Mary for 2-year-old fillies by a nose. She was in the middle between Gossamer Wings a nose behind on one side and Shades of Blue a similar margin further behind on the other. The favorite Chelsea Cloisters had an uncharacteristic poor start and never reached contention finishing 11th.

The Jersey Stakes

Expert Eye got through a narrow opening a furlong out and sprinted clear to a 4 1/2-lengths win. Society Power was second, followed by Could It Be Love. The favorite, Emaraaty, finished 16th in a field of 21.

The Royal Hunt Cup

Settle For Bay took the lead a with one furlong left to win the Royal Hunt Cup by 2 1/4 lengths. Afaak was second with Circus Couture third.
